In Today’s Make More Money Monday’s blog I discuss the biggest mistake I made when starting my business.
Hopefully you will avoid this same error because it cost me close to $100 000 in lost revenue and man hours. I thought that I could learn everything on my own. I did not need help, I did not need guidance and it cost me big time! Until I met my mentor..

I think that it would be a trmendous idea to offer a mentoring programme.I have been fiddling about online for over a year,and have’nt made a penny.I’ve been in and out of more “next big thing”s than you can shake a stick at.I’m ashamed to say that I have spent thousands on this and that programme,with sales pitches so overblown,that in the “real world”I would have run away from.Your emails and blogs seem to be focussed and sensible in an inbox of spamtastic schemes,business in boxes,mentoring offers from strangers,etc.There are so many “deals” out there,which to try,who to believe?I would welcome somone who could point me in the right direction,and not down another online cul de sac.
This is too good, I gotta share this in my own blog. This Show has got to be seen by far more than membership of GVO/EVP/HotConference.

Very important for people to realize you need a mentor that is at a level you want to attain.

Your right – Mentoring is the way! I have been looking for mentors for a while. I have been coached but I need more than that.
I actually talked to Mike about 2 weeks ago about this idea.
I need someone to help me start to make some money.

very good advice !! am trying to start my own two internet businesses and it is hard !! don’t have any family members that can help. i get very little money to operate with and sometimes it is very hard to get the right information and the right person to help. i do understand that most internet companies are scams !! i just hope that i realize with ones are bad before i spend more money than is necesarry to suceed !!
There are a lot of bad mentoring programs out there, so selecting the right one require some research.
The amount of time I have saved by just listening to a mentor, or expert, in my niche has been tremendous. Like you guys, I also stumbled around in the dark, then found that magic mentor light switch. Whoa, what a difference. And many of the “guru’s” out there right now are stumbling all over themselves trying to get their latest coaching project going. It’s a great time to be learning.

This is what we all need. Like many others, I have spent a ton of money on useless ebooks, software, get rich quick nonsense…etc…
What everyone really needs is to get someone who knows what to do, when to do it, and how to do it, to teach us how to make money…

Thanks again. A comment for yur new logo video..You have the words grow your business and make money shrinking( in the first 5 seconds). Mmmm. What do you think that says on the subconcious reading of who you are and what you “really” do..,! Do try expanding the script, often the obvious things become the most important, as you know well yourself.

You are so right Joel and Mike.
The lack of proper guidance in the very beginning of any online venture is probably the biggest reason
for so many failures in our industry.
I’ve also got lost in the internet fog for about six months back in 2003, then luckily I visited the Kiosk conference room and by communicating with other fellow members and by listening to your suggestions,I soon realized that if I was going to last I would
need a domain name which I got right away, and then to concentrate on learning how to reach others
to share my views without going broke on expensive internet advertising.
Today, thanks to your past teaching and to my online mentors I’m making a decent living by applying
what I have learned in the last six years.
And yes Guys! You should also start a mentoring program by combining the Easy Video Producer and Hot Conference technology to help those who are constantly lost in the internet fog at the mercy of the Gurus.

I am glad you brought the issue of a mentor. I have wasted 3 years struggling on the internet. Mentoring would be a welcome idea and it assure us of progress with marketing. It seems that the big boys always promote their friends products and as such it is difficult to establish yourself.

One thing I noticed about your blog is that the link to the post is for example: http://joeltherien.com/blog/?p=163
The ending where it say’s p=163 can be changed to the keywords (better for seo) by changing it in wordpress permalinks i believe! it’s better for Seo! Hope that helps you get a bit more traffic! Have a great night!

Joel/Mike thank you so much for sharing this topic. I have been stand on my soap box for over a year now, and I wonder if anyone is listen. Mentoring and coaching is a critical element of business success. I am a business development consultant. I specialize in corporate communication, sales training, and collective visioning in the company environment. I am a coach, mentor, and I have and employ three coaches myself. At every stage of my business growth, I may out grow my mentor and need to look for a new one. Joel, you were exactly correct when you said that mentor needs to have been there done that!!!
There are far to many claims of mentoring and coach I would add Please Please Do your do diligence and really find out if that person you are being mentored by has a credible back gound and can really help you.

I appologise at our dry humor. I certainly did not mean that literally. I was poking fun at myself no one else. Infact alot of our clients that are literally making millions online are over 65. Plus my mentor Michael Cowpland is in his 60s.

I just love your videos. Getting a mentor is a great idea but ther are hundreds of so called metors online, who can one trust.
It seems most of them just want your cash and they are just selling the same info that they got coned on.:-)
Im starting my own traffic sytem in a few months im using your video splash pages and your contact manager to do a pre launch. Its working realy well.

You are absolutely right.
My experience: ìm in a mentoring programm of International Steinbeis Institute, coached by RKW (Rationaly, controll and innovation in industry). But there was one problem: The automobile cluster here is (or was) sooo much dominating. They looked at my internetmarketing concept and said: no, we´ve got different philosophy. s an engineer You need to be advice giver, so go on and follow the old road, be a club member, take Your customers from mouth-to-mouth-propaganda.
I decided to go my own way, because my products and ebooks do fit into global niche.
So, there is really need for help of excellent mentors.
This is no lamento, I believe in passion and good training.

1st , i would really like to thanks and congratulate you guys a lot for your sincere and honest advices on starting out mentoring programs especially for those newbies like myself who had been lost for quit a long time on the internet by the all so called ” INTERNET GURU’S ” who claim making money online was as easy as A – B – C.
Hope that you guys can really…plan strategically for us newbies…complete framework…to complete this mentoring courses stage by stage…so that…we can see our true progress…

I believe it will be a great idea to follow a mentor who has gone the whole lenght of the rope before you. The reason most people don’t succed in anything is because of lack of knowledge and lack of mentorship.
Mentorship program is a way to create a group of succesful people that are your prodigees and are more than willing to go with you to any length because you showed them the rope.
Excellent video as usual. Thank you Joel. About 5 years ago after being manager of a Internet company that went Bankrupt and shut down all its affiliate offices I got hold of book called Mentored by Millionaire by Steven Scott and it totaly changed my life. He goes in detail how anyone can go from Nothing to GREAT Success as far as business is concerned when they have a mentor to coach them along…thats why he went from losing 9 jobs in 6 years to becoming a multi millionaire.

I believe this is a great idea. I have lost a ton of money following one mentor/one program and usually this mentor could only send me to his other programs. Take for example infinity800.com, I signed up because it was supposed to be a 6 easy step program. I requested help and was told I fail to advertise and promote the website. How could I advertise/promote the website if I do not have a long list of leads like all of them?
I have signed up for so many programs that I do not know which ones are really working.
Any way I do hope your mentoring program does work.
